Hi and welcome to LeafyLair guys. In this article, we give you five quick tips on pruning or prune indoor plants. And these tips will apply to almost any type of indoor plant. Pruning isn’t just about cutting—it’s about helping your plants thrive. Why does it matter? Because it encourages growth, shapes your plants, and keeps them healthy. Let’s dive into the how and what of pruning indoor plants effectively.
Tip #1: When to Prune Indoor Plants

Number one. Most indoor plants, no matter if they’re a vine plant or if it has stalks or stems, you can prune it almost any time of year. However, there is a period of the year where it’s best to prune. And that is usually in spring or in autumn.
Now the reason for that is that in spring the plant is getting ready to grow. So if you go in and prune just before it starts to grow, you will actually increase your chances of getting more shoots from that pruning. Or you can wait until autumn after it has grown and go in and prune them. Because then you’re not disturbing the plant as much.
Tip #2: How to Use Clean Tools

Number two. Use a sharp scissor or shearer when you’re pruning your plants. But make sure that the scissor or shearer is completely clean before using it. Use dish soap and if you can also use some form of alcohol-based solution on your scissor or shearer before pruning. This will prevent you from transferring any bacteria or fungus to the plant.
Tip #3: Where to Cut for Best Results

Number three. When you’re pruning your plant, make sure that you’re pruning it at least one centimeter or half an inch above a node. Now what is a node? A node is where on the stem, stalker branch you have a leaf coming out of it. The node is this point where the leaf is coming out from. So make the cut at least one centimeter or half an inch above that node like this.
Now the reason for this is that the stem or vine here can actually die back a little bit. So if you make that cut too close to the node here the node could die. And then you will not get any new shoots from that point. But if you have a plant that has a more dense structure like this jueflera here, if you can’t make that cut one centimeter above a node then make the cut in between two nodes like this.
Tip #4: Prune for a Perfect Shape

Number four. Always prune a little bit harder than you might want to. What I mean by that is that when you’re pruning you’re actually trying to make a new silhouette of the plant. Now this one here that I cut earlier I actually cut that one a little bit too high. Because what I want from this plant is that when it eventually gives out new shoots I want a perfectly shaped silhouette.
And if I keep it like this, the new shoots here are going to come from these nodes around the cut here. And then it’s just going to be bigger. So I will not get the silhouette I’m off to. So make sure when you make that cut that you make it a little bit further down than you might want. Because when it eventually gives out that new shoot, you will get that perfect silhouette that you want.
Tip #5: What to Do with Cuttings

Number five. With most indoor plots, use what you’ve cut off from that pruning to propagate your plant. By using this you can actually create more plants. If you want to know more about propagation we have a video you can go and watch.
